Geography Facts: Vancouver Island is north of Washington state and east of the coast of mainland British Columbia. It is home to Victoria, the capital of British Columbia. The Island is accessible by ferry from the Vancouver area or from Seattle and other small northern Washington towns. It is surprisingly remote outside of Victoria and has miles of rugged beaches and small coastal fishing towns. There are many stands of virgin timber here, but sadly most are still being cut down. In a few places there are protected forests where you can still find some of the tallest trees anywhere. Because of the warm ocean currents, the island has a surprisingly mild climate and supports a northern rain forest ecosystem. |
