Bicycling
My passion
for cycling began in 1972 when I realized I had gained 50
pounds since high school. I purchased a used Schwinn bicycle
began to exercise. Two years later I had lost 50 pounds and
was hooked on cycling. The experience also kindled my
passion for healthy living which has continued to this day.
I tried
competitive cycling but found that my abilities and
interests moved in the direction of long distance or
ultramarathon cycling. Between the years of 1980 and 1989 I
rode more than 140, 000 miles. In 1985 I rode 22, 000 miles
and participated in a transcontinental ride. I rode from
Huntington Beach, CA to Virginia Beach, VA in 14 days, 10
hours (3,100 miles).

In 1992 I
road from Seattle Wa, to Williamsburg, VA in 23 days. (3,400
miles) The ride was through beautiful mountains and amber
waves of grain. Despite rain for parts of the first eleven
days, it was a great experience.
In 1996
I rode on the old Route 66 from Chicago to Santa Monica, CA.
(2,400 miles) This ride made me realize I am getting older.

Summer mornings you can find me at Once Upon a Bagel
in Highland Park at about 6:00 AM. The rest of the year
we ride there on weekends and holidays.

The
'50s
Since my
wife and I grew up in the 50's, we have enjoyed the
nostalgia that surrounds that era. We have, over the years,
transformed parts of our home into a 50's era motif. First
came 40's and 50's furniture. Our home was built in
1954.
Then, when a
diner we had been eating at for years closed, we purchased
the fixtures and turned our basement into a
diner,
complete with a jukebox!

Next came
the car. After seeing a

Buick
in a storage space in Minnesota we agreed we had to have
it...Finally came my bicycle trip down Route 66 which sort
of culminated our growing interest in the 40's and 50's.
