Panorama of the West Coast of Iceland --- June 2000

This remote beach is at the end of the Snæfellneses Peninsula near the town of Hellisandur. To get here take the road to Öndverðarnes Lighthouse a few miles out of town. This road is narrow, bumpy and takes you right through a lava field. The lighthouse area is filled with nesting birds and a beautiful coastline. There are several hiking trails along the coast and through the lava fields. It was a quiet and peaceful place. If you travel here, be sure to stop for lunch in Hellisandur and see the little fishing museum.

You are near the area that inspired Jules Verne to use as the setting the start of his novel,
Journey to the Center of the Earth.
